This is the only Major League card on which Moose Stubing appeared, 1989 Topps, as Manager of the California Angels. Stubing had taken over for the fired Cookie Rojas at the end of the 1988 season, but was replaced by Doug Rader at the beginning of the 1989 season.
Despite a stellar high school athletic career in the Bronx, Stubing’s athletic prowess never translated to success as a Major League ballplayer. He spent parts of 15 seasons in the minors with several organizations. His only call-up was in 1967 with the Angels, where he batted only 5 times, all as a pinch hitter, went 0-5, and struck out 4 times.
Stubing fared no better as a manager. In his tenure of 8 games at the end of the ’88 season, the Angels lost all 8 games, making him the only man in Major League history to be both hitless as a player, and winless as a manager.
Despite his lack of success in the Major League win columns, Stubing was a beloved character in the world of sports with a long and distinguished baseball career as a Minor League player and manager, as a Major League scout and coach, and as a well-respected major-college basketball referee.
Stubing passed away in 2018.
